BIKO HOUSE

Steve Biko lived from 1946 to 1977. He was a South African anti-apartheid activist. Steve Biko is best known for being at the forefront of the grassroots anti-apartheid campaign known as the Black Consciousness Movement from 1960 to 1970 in our country. He was brutally beaten and then killed in Pretoria.

GERWEL HOUSE

Jakes Gerwel lived in the Northern Suburbs of Cape Town, South Africa from 1946 to 2012. He was a South African academic and once Vice Chancellor of the University of the Western Cape. An anti-apartheid activist, Jakes Gerwel also served as the Director-General of the Presidency when Nelson Mandela was in office.

PURCELL HOUSE

Henry Purcell was born and lived in London, England, from 1659 to 1695. He was a baroque composer who is cherished and remembered for the opera and other music he created for Shakespearian plays. His most famous composition was used as part of Queen Elizabeth’s  “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” production. Purcell died of Tuberculosis at the age of 36.

MORGEN HOUSE

Catharina Ustings was the first female to own land in Tokai. She landed in South Africa a short 10 years after Jan van Riebeeck first arrived in the Cape. The Estate she owned, originally known as Zwaanswyk, was granted to her in 1688 and on it she built a house, which she named “Morgen”. Catharina Ustings was one of the first landowners to free her slaves.
